April: Stress Awareness Month

Happy Tuesday!

I'm trying to be positive.  Tuesdays are probably the longest day of the week for me but let's focus on something that doesn't stress us out!  Did you know that April is stress awareness month?  I'm sure you have if you have gotten a chance to check out our new stress bulletin board!  Instead of talking about the ways to stress less, let's talk about unhealthy ways to deal with stress.

1.  Drinking, smoking, and other vices - While these things might bring momentary release, they are not a permanent solution to your health.  Not to mention they can actually become a serious health concern if you become addicted.  These can actually have a negative effect and stress you out more once your "high" is gone.

2.  Hibernate - When you're having a stressful day nothing sounds better than your bed and sleeping it all away.  Except you don't actually sleep it away.......  The stress will come back as soon as you wake.  Research has shown that you can wake up feeling even more tired if you sleep excessively.  Leaning on extended amounts of sleep can limit your productivity and keep you isolated.  Keep the naps to a minimum and use that time to get what you need done.  You'll feel better at the end of the day with a clean slate.

3.  Ignoring the problem - You may have relief for a day but your to do list will start to build.  This can lead to anxiety and nervousness.  Keep moving on and work extra hard during the week day so you can have a restful weekend.

4.  Dwell on the negative - I think this one is especially important for people who think too much and worry about their lives.  Try some yoga or meditation in order to rest your mind.  Dwelling on something that you can't control at the moment will only bring you down.  Try to see the cup as half full and you'll notice your mood increase over time.  Worst case scenarios in your head and can turn into something manageable if you let it.

5.  Eat your feelings - Don't do this, as tempting as it is!  It's another vicious cycle of a momentary high followed by feelings of guilt.  Find happy alternatives that satisfy your cravings while staying healthy.  Don't allow your body to associate negative feelings with eating.

Remember to utilize JOHO staff in all things wellness.  We are not only here for fitness advice but also nutritional, health, and well-being.  We'd be happy to help flush some of that stress out!
