Gym Etiquette: The Do's and Dont's

Hey Everyone,

A new year is a great chance to refresh on proper gym etiquette.  Wait!  Don't click out of this post yet.  I know gym etiquette isn't the most exciting topic but everyone appreciates the courtesy, even you.  Here are a few of the do's and don'ts when using the fitness center (or any gym).

DO'S:

Do wear deodorant:  It is a close space so try to keep an extra deodorant in your bag/locker to refresh before your workout.

Do take your clothes home and wash them:  Please take your clothes home on a regular basis, especially if you are doing high intensity workouts or sweating a lot.  We appreciate the sweat but we don't need to smell it.

Do keep the perspiration to yourself: Please wipe down all of the equipment after use.  I'm not talking just the handles and the main screen.  Your sweat can drop all over the machine and you might touch parts of the equipment you didn't realize.

Do place your weights back after use:  I see so many plates left on bars in the weight room.  Please be courteous to your fitness center staff and don't make them lift five 45lb plates every couple of hours.  Think about the people that could be using that equipment after you.  They might not be able to lift 45lbs plates and could end up injuring themselves in the process.

Do stay at home if you are sick:  The gym can already be a place filled with germs.  Instead of spreading those germs, take a few days off and let your body rest until you are feeling better.

Do share the equipment: We are lucky to have such a friendly community here at JOHO but regardless, be aware of the people around you.  Be open to letting them jump in in-between your set.

DONT'S:

Don't make loud noises:  Being a lifter myself, I understand that a little grunt can help you finish your last rep, but it can get to a point where it is a bit excessive.  Be respectful of the classes and members, and be mindful of yourself.

Don't drop/slam weights:  Try to refrain from just dropping your weight once a set is complete.  If you can lift it, you can make that extra bit of effort to set it back down.  If you are using a machine, don't slam your weight after each rep.  Have good control through the contraction and the extension.

Don't treat the locker room like your personal bathroom:  Keep your items confined to your space and always pick up after yourself.

Let's keep our gym an inviting, clean, and comfortable place to exercise!
