Farm to Table

As we head into fall, and the temperatures & humidity (hopefully) drop into a more comfortable range, it's a great time to take advantage of the many great farmers' markets in our area! If you ask me, there is nothing better than getting to interact with the farmer who grew your food, and it always tastes so much fresher. I became totally hooked on farmers' markets while in college in western New York. Every weekend I would grab my re-usable bag and go pick out produce for the week. I found that I could get great quality produce for sometimes even cheaper than the grocery store (and almost always better tasting!) Getting children involved by taking a family trip to the market can help promote healthy eating habits and teach kids where their food comes from. In a time when a lot of our food is pre-packaged and shipped far from where it was grown, this can be a really great way to reconnect with our food source. Not to mention, supporting local farms is a great way to promote sustainability in our local economy! Below, I've put together a list of great farmers' markets in the area for you to try. Click the market's name for details on location, hours and what they sell.

There is no way I would rather spend a weekend morning than wandering around the colorful isles of the farmers' market with a fresh cup of locally roasted coffee in my hand.  Something about getting to have a conversation and share a smile with the person who grew your food is a special thing. I hope I have inspired you to try it out as well!

P.S. Don't forget that the JOHO Health Fair is coming up soon (September 23rd) and is Harvest/Farmers' Market themed! There will even be prizes from a local farm to table company!
