Understanding YOUR Body Composition

Happy Wednesday,

This week is our Tanita Scale screening!  If you haven't already, it's a great chance to find out your BMI, body fat percentage, and more.  I want to give you a little background information so you are better educated and can take it with you for future body composition screenings.

What is BMI?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index.  BMI takes two things into consideration, height and weight.  Body Mass Index is better suited when looking at large populations.  While it can be a reference for you, I wouldn't recommend only taking it into account.  It does not look at your muscle mass and the frame of your body.  You could have a lot of muscle and be considered "Overweight" even though you are very healthy.

How accurate is your body fat percentage?

The Tanita Scale has a 5% variance in body fat percentage.  If you are overly hydrated then it tends to estimate a lower than normal reading.  If you are less hydrated, such as right in the morning, then you will tend to see a higher than normal reading.  Have the staff take skin folds as well to compare!

What does FFM stand for?

FFM stands for Fat Free Mass.  It is everything in your body that is not fat.

What is TBW?

TBW stands for total body water.  That's how much water is in your system!

What is BMR?

BMR is your Basal Metabolic Rate.  This means that if you are sitting on a couch all day doing nothing then that is how many calories you would need to consume just for basic body functions.  This is very useful when you are trying to gain or lose weight.  We can take your BMR and add in your daily activity to give you calories per day you should be eating to lose, maintain, or gain weight.  And when I say we - that means the JOHO staff!
