BIG NEWS! New Nutrition Labels Coming!

Hey Everyone,

I am so excited to share this news with you!  The FDA is changing nutrition labels based on current research that looks at the link between foods and chronic diseases.  The new label will be easier to read and pick healthier options.  Current labels are very deceptive and make you think you are eating less than you are.  I'm excited to see on a global scale how it impacts people and hopefully affects our obesity crisis.  I would like to share a few bullet points highlighting the big changes to be made.

  • Serving size will be bigger and in bold along with calories.  This will make it easier to read and highlight that the nutrition on the label is only for that serving size.
  • In regards to vitamins, the actual amount will be listed along with the percentage of your daily values.  This is beneficial because not everyone follows a 2,000 calorie diet and can help those make sure they are within their daily limits.
  • I love this one!  When looking at sugars, it will add in how many added sugars there are in a serving.  Not all sugar is bad so by adding added sugars, you can judge if it's really processed or has a lot of natural sugars that are good for your body.
  • "Calories from Fat" is being removed because research has shown that it's better to know the types of fat.
  • Serving sizes are changing based on what people are actually eating.  By law, manufacturers must label based on what is being eaten and not what is recommended by the FDA.  This is VERY important to understand when eating.  Since people are eating and drinking more, unfortunately serving sizes will be increasing.  Don't let yourself fall into the trap!
  • In regards to items that are more than a serving size, such as a 15oz soda, it will be labeled as one serving.  This is an ingenious change because most people don't know to multiply the nutrients by two.  Putting exactly how much is in the bottle could deter a lot of people from it.  This was done because you normally drink the full bottle in one sitting
There are a few other smaller changes but these are the important ones.  Finally, take a look at the old nutrition label compared with the new and keep your eyes out!
