BMI: What You Need To Know

Happy Friday!

I want to talk today about BMI or Body Mass Index.  I'm sure all of you have experienced BMI at the doctor or even here at JOHO.  This article does an excellent job of explaining why that shouldn't be your only indicator of your health.  Luckily for you, JOHO can take body composition measurements for you at anytime and they are free!  We can take circumference measurements and do skin fold measurements in order to determine your body fat percentage.  This along with your BMI can give you a good indication of how healthy you are.  In reality, BMI is used more for population data.  If a scientist wants to look at the United States and it's obesity levels then they could use BMI as an indicator for which states are more obese (see picture below).  It is not meant to be a good indicator of individual health.  Be sure to keep this in mind and always look within at your eating and exercise patterns to determine your health!
