Is using dumbbells on cardio equipment helpful or harmful?

We all try to get the most out of our workouts while we are at the gym, but does using dumbbells while on the cardio equipment really ramp up the calorie burn as much as you think?

Myth #1: Carrying dumbbells while I walk on the treadmill
or use the elliptical will increase my calorie burn.

Myth #2: Performing bicep curls, tricep presses
or shoulder presses while on the treadmill or ellipitical, I can
combine my cardio and resistance training in half the time.

Facts:

Multiple studies have shown that you don't burn
more calories over time by carrying extra weight.

In fact, a 2007 study shows it can result in negative effects on your health. You are probably holding onto the dumbbells fairly tight so you don't drop them. However, adding external weight along with squeezing the weights too tight can abnormally increase in blood pressure.

Trying to add resistance to your cardio workout? It is a better idea to get off
the cardio equipment and lifting weights separately. Here are some reasons why:

*By lifting separately you will be able to use heavier weights and go
through a safer and more effective range of motion.

*You will decrease the chance of injury to yourself and those around you. It may not happen, but you do not want to lose
your grip on your weight while on a piece of cardio equipment.  There is no telling where that weight might end up
and who it could injure if you accidentally drop it.

*You will not be performing the lift with proper form! By trying to press, row or curl on a piece of equipment and maintain your balance, you will be forced into unsafe lifting positions. Taking the time to get off the equipment to lift will ensure that you won't injure the rest of your body.

*By waiting to lift weights you can concentrate on the task at hand;
your cardio workout. Put in some extra effort and make every minute count.

To wrap it up:

You can still have a quick, effective workout involving cardio and weights.
But take the time to separate them and stay safe.
